Sources indentify Matthew Joseph as man killed after shooting two Detroit police officers

DETROIT (WXYZ) - Law enforcement sources are telling 7 Action News that the man who shot and wounded two Detroit Police officers Tuesday night has been identified as Matthew Renard Joseph.

Joseph was shot and killed during the exchange of gunfire on the city's west side.

The 23-year-oldJoseph was on parole for armed robbery and felony firearms convictions at the time of Tuesday's incident. He served a little over five years on a 15 year maximum sentence that was part of a plea deal.

Joseph was released from prison on October 2, 2012. He was due to stay on parole until October 2014.

Sources are telling 7 Action News that the officers were tracking Joseph as part of the investigation into a murder that occurred last month at the Rio Motel on McNichols.

The officers apparently tired to stop the car Joseph was driving, leading to a chase that ended when the car was boxed in at Linwood near Hooker.

That's where the shoot out happened .

One of the officers was hit in the head. He is still in critical condition. The other has been released, after being treated for a gun shot wound to the leg.

Joseph was shot and killed. Two other people who were in the car with him are in police custody.
