DETROIT (WXYZ) - Gas thieves were caught red-handed Wednesday morning stealing from a Detroit station.
It happened on the 17,000 block of Grand River near Fenkell and the Southfield Freeway.
The clerk at the BP station tells 7 Action News that police caught the suspects pumping about a hundred gallons of gas out of the underground tanks and into a tank hidden in their van.
"They knew what they were doing," said Samer Bazzi, the BP Manager.
Surveillance video shows that the crooks were able to tap the tank without even leaving their van. They apparently hooked up everything through a hole in the van's floor.
Police are looking into whether the 2 men they arrested are responsible for any other such thefts at area gas stations.
Hafiz Bazzi owns several area gas stations. He says when he saw news of this crime this morning he recognized the van used as one that targeted two of his stations in recent days. He says he has surveillance video of the van at his Citgo at 7 Mile and Mound. He plans to turn the video over to police.
"I have video. It is the same van," he said.
He says he believes the gas is being sold on the black market to competing gas stations. He hopes the buyers are busted too.
