DETROIT (WXYZ) - A vigil is going to be held for beloved Osborn High School football coach George Coker Jr. on Saturday, April 26 at 8 p.m. It is taking place on the football field.
Coker's daughter says he died Thursday morning of a sudden heart attack, and was the coach of the football team for over 10 years.
She says his job was way bigger than football, and his passion was to instill life skills and pour knowledge into his students and those that surrounded him.
Former students and others have been showing their support and memories on a Facebook page created for the vigil.
One former student wrote, "This man was more than just a coach to me, he was one of the people who made sure I walked across the stage in 2007. He kept me in line, and showed me that he cared about me."
Another wrote, "An unforgettable man. You touched so many of our lives, you loved us unconditionally and punished us when we needed to be. You kept us going when we didn't want to keep going, you kept us level headed when we found ourselves going astray."
The football field is located behind Osborn High School, at 11600 East 7 Mile Road.
