Volunteers honored for helping DPS students learn to read

Detroit (WXYZ) - Detroit Public Schools just saw record breaking improvements on their MEAP test, and volunteers are getting a lot of credit.

Saturday at Renaissance High School hundreds of Reading Corps Volunteers were honored during a rally.

They are people who give up some of their time during the day to read to elementary school children. The goal is to make sure every child knows how to read and succeed on the MEAP tests reading section.

The event honoring Reading Corps volunteers was made possible in part thanks to some Grand Valley State students.

They just arrived in Detroit for an alternative Spring Break.  They worked the event, and will be volunteering in the city all week.
