DETROIT (WXYZ) - US Attorney Barbara McQuade is holding a news conference addressing the conviction of former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and contractor Bobby Ferguson on federal corruption charges.
McQuade complimented the jury's hard work in the trial and said they did what they were supposed to do.
She told reporters that Kilpatrick used the power of public office to enrich himself, his friends and his family.
"The case was all about this. Kwame Kilpatrick stole from the people of Detroit," McQuade said. She said the former mayor "cheated the system."
McQuade also discussed the Kilpatrick Civic Fund and said he stole from the non-profit organization and ripped off the donors.
"Kwame Kilpatrick didn't lead the city, he looted the city," she said.
In addition to talking about the case itself, she thanked her team for years of hard work on the case. She says they gave up weekends and holidays to work on the case and put in extra hours with no overtime pay.
"In contrast to Kwame Kilpatrick. This is real public service," McQuade said.
