Wayne County Prosecutor announces murder, manslaughter & firearms charges in Renisha McBride death

(WXYZ) - Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced charges against 54-year-old Theodore Wafer in connection to the shooting death of Renisha McBride.

Wafer is charged with 3 counts including second-degree murder, manslaughter and felony firearm possession and was arraigned Friday afternoon.

Renisha McBride, 19, was shot in the face on the porch of a Dearborn Heights home earlier this month by the homeowner.

The Dearborn Heights homeowner told police when he shot McBride he thought she was trying to break into his house.

During the news conference Kym Worthy said, "We do not believe he acted in lawful self-defense."

Her family believes she was trying to get help after crashing her car.

A report released Thursday by the Wayne County Medical Examiner's office showed that McBride had a blood alcohol level of .218 %.  That is almost three times the legal limit.

However, the family of McBride and their attorney say that did not give the homeowner the right to shoot her.
