DETROIT (WXYZ) - The investigation continues into a fatal shooting that shut down westbound I-96 for several hours Sunday afternoon at Grand River and Schaefer on Detroit's west side.
Police say the situation actually began on the service drive when an SUV with two people inside was sitting at a red light on northbound Schaefer.
Officers say a dark colored luxury sedan approached on the driver's side. The passenger then opened fire with a high powered gun into the SUV.
The driver of the SUV took a hard right and sped away, ending up going down the embankment onto I-96. The SUV ended up pointing eastbound in the westbound lanes of the freeway, under the Grand River overpass.
One of the people in the SUV was killed. The other was described as wounded and taken to the hospital.
Police are searching for the dark colored sedan. It is described as either an Audi or a Lexus. It is black with silver trim.
Drivers are being advised to avoid the area.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Detroit Police.
