Detroit, Mich (WXYZ) - It’s spirits--with a Detroit flavor!
Our/Detroit vodka will debut next week from a micro-distillery in southwest Detroit.
“We’re integrating the vodka and infusing it here and distilling it here in Detroit," said Kate Bordine, 32, one of the partners in the business. In building the brand, the women are looking to create a synergy around the liquid by bringing together entrepreneurs, artists and non-profit leaders in the community.
The project that has international backing from Pernod Ricard, the owner of Absolut vodka.
“They’ve really been able to invest in us and kind of let us develop a distillery and project that speaks to the city," said Sara Aldridge, 34, who has worked with Bordine for over a year in developing the business.
The Detroit location, on Bagley, just down from the street from Honey Bee Market will be part of a global network of distilleries. Berlin, Germany was first to be established. Detroit is the first US city selected, which is a source of pride for these young entrepreneurs.
When the vodka making begins, 1,000 bottles per batch will be produced here, according to distillery manager JeanMarie Morrish.
“All of the distilleries throughout the world will use the same recipe but we will source ingredients locally," said Aldridge. "All the vodka throughout the world will taste pretty similar but there will be some nuances because of the water and grain and corn that we're sourcing (locally)."
The 40-person tasting room in the former Bagley Billiard Center building is expected to open to the public August 15.
“We’re really hoping that people rally behind this product and want to share it with friends and family and really just celebrate what Detroit is.”
Our/Detroit vodka will sell for $16.99 a bottle.
