Police may take an oath to serve and protect us. However, they also show us how to protect ourselves.

The Brighton Police Department has always cracked down on distracted driving, but now cops are kicking it up a couple notches.

BPD has a new Distracted Drivers Program and it’s already proving that it’s packing a punch.

They have a designated detail on duty for this task.

What are officers looking for when you’re behind the wheel? Motorist checking their email on their cellphones, engaging in social media, eating, doing makeup, shaving, reading, watching videos and of course texting.

Anything keeping you, from keeping your eyes peeled.

“it’s cautionary, i always feel like, when somebody says something to you then you sit back and you say ok i better pay attention,” says a Livingston County driver.

if you get ticketed for distracted driving, there are fines attached. However, the dollar amount can vary.
