Dexter teen gets a second chance at life after Action News talks with insurance provider

Dexter teen and Mom healing from transplant

DEXTER, Mich. (WXYZ) - Sixteen-year-old Ariel Fischer has had her ups and downs and multiple trips back to Mayo Clinic, but by the changes in her outside appearance you can immediately tell her new insides are working.

"They say the first two years are the hardest" said Ariel.

We first me Ariel and Mother Melinda Maihoffer at their Dexter home last April when her life picture looked grim.

With only 10% of her liver functioning, she slept 18 hours a day.

Make-a-Wish had granted her a trip to New York City to meet reality star "Cake Boss" and her insurance provider was denying surgery coverage because of her size.

"I'm not going to sit back and do nothing while my daughter dies," Melinda told us last year.

We took action and got the insurance company to clear Ariel for the transplant surgery she desperately needed.

Ariel has a rare liver disease called Primary Schelrosing Cholengitis, meaning her bile ducts were diminishing.

Turns out, her mother was the best match! Last October both went under the knife for Ariel to receive half of Melinda's liver.

Seven months later, you can see how Ariel and her mom are doing now!
