A Saturday night joyride on an off-road vehicle turned tragic for a 13-year old Howell middle school student.

The accident happened at Hawk Meadows Golf Club, which is located in Howell Township.

Matthew Longthorne, 13, died at the scene, according to the Livingston County Sheriff's Office. The 28-year old driver of the off-road type vehicle worked at the golf course and was a close family friend.

"He and the 13-year old passenger occupant were both thrown from the ORV and the ORV ultimately struck the 13-year old causing a fatal injury to him," said Undersheriff Michael Murphy. The driver was treated and released at a local hospital.

An eighth grade student at Highlander Way Middle School, Matthew was well-liked, according to district spokesman Thomas Gould. The school is making sure students get the help they need to deal with the sudden loss of a classmate.

"It involves making sure that we have counselors in the building to support all our students," Gould said. "We have a counselor who will be following Matthew's schedule throughout the day to insure that his classmates know that someone is there to help them if they need it."

There is no indication that alcohol or drugs played a role in the accident, according to Murphy.

"By all accounts, the young man was very well respected and very well-liked in the community and the schools," Murphy said. "That makes it that much more difficult and the fact that the driver is a family friend, I mean, I can't even imagine."

The investigation into the accident is continuing. The Livingston County Prosecutor will ultimately decide if any charges are warranted.
