New snow plow hits Michigan roads this winter

(WXYZ) - You may see something a bit extraordinary traveling down I-96 this winter.

For the first time in Michigan, MDOT will use the Tow Plow - 25 feet of snow plowing and road salting muscle - this winter.

The tandem-style machine of tow plow and tow truck covers two full lanes at a time, saving MDOT equipment and personnel costs. It can be seen in Brighton this winter, plowing areas of I-96 and US-23.

The cost of a new Tow Plow is $93,000 and with regular maintenance it can last 30 years compared to the 10-year lifespan of a standard plow.

Other states successfully using Tow Plows include Missouri, Minnesota, Maine, Wisconsin, Utah and Ohio.
