CHESTERFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich (WXYZ) - Jeffery Atkins, 45, is behind bars after being arrested outside the Michaels Craft Store on Gratiot in Chesterfield Township.
He was arrested after a frantic mom who was with her three children called 911 crying and whispering, telling police Atkins was following her all over the store.
The woman stayed on the phone with the dispatcher while a marked car raced to the store. The dispatcher told the woman to walk out to the officer, she did and the suspect followed. He was then taken into custody.
"He is a predator and a threat to society," said Officer David Madill who made the arrest. The officer says Atkins had spent more than 7 years in prison for basically doing the same thing, following a woman around a store-- but in that case he touched the woman.
Atkins has been arraigned in this case, but because he never touched the woman, he was charged with disorderly conduct and failing to register as a convicted sex offender. Both are misdemeanors.
He is being held on a $5,000 cash bond. A psychiatric evaluation was ordered.
