MT. CLEMENS, Mich. (WXYZ) - A large fire broke out Sunday evening at a building in Mt. Clemens that housed three different businesses including a workout facility for a lot of local high school students.
The building on Cass Ave houses a baseball training facility, a healthcare training facility and B-FIT DETROIT. The owner of B-FIT DETROIT arrived shortly after the fire started.
“I dropped to my knees. To put your life work and the kids, that’s what it’s about,” said Justin Brantley, owner of B-FIT DETROIT.
Brantley opened the gym about two years ago. The gym specifically trains kids and teenagers to be better athletes and prepares them for college sports.
“Justin is not only a friend, but he’s like a father figure to a lot of these kids. They come here they work out he gets them into college. These are the things that they do at this place. It’s a devastation to the city,” said Thomas Barnes who brings his children to train at the gym.
The fire appears to have started at the back of the building by the gym. Brantley believes someone set his place on fire on purpose.
“There were days when we had our class interrupted by 6 or 7 officers coming in to tell me the music is too loud,” said Brantley.
Brantley and his lawyer told us the city recently slapped him with two noise violation charges but they were dropped and that the fire marshal also recently cited Brantley for two building code violations.
“One could say it’s coincidence or one could say that but I definitely feel a sense of not being wanted in the city,” said Brantley.
The Mt. Clemens Fire Department does not have a cause of the fire yet.
