NEW HAVEN, Mich. (WXYZ) - The life of a 25-year-old woman abruptly and tragically ended around 11 p.m. Thursday.
Melanie James was riding her bike after leaving her shift at a Subway restaurant along Gratiot in the Village of New Haven when she was struck by a 1990 Geo Tracker.
It happened at the intersection of Gratiot and 27 Mile Road.
"The person driving the vehicle stopped a short distance later, looked around and made a decision to flee on foot,” said Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham.
According to the sheriff, two young women coming from their prom stopped on the scene moments after the crash and called police with a description of the suspect.
"We brought our K-9 Unit in looking for the suspect. He was found in a wooded area,” said Sheriff Wickersham.
The suspect, from Richmond, was found in a recreational vehicle hiding under a blanket. Police are still investigating the case but they say the area of the crash was dimly lit. Investigators believe the suspect may have been drinking alcohol before the incident.
The suspect is in custody right now, but his name is not being released until his arraignment.
The arraignment is likely to take place tomorrow.
Meanwhile, police believe alcohol was a factor because they found at least one beer bottle in his vehicle.
