Roseville - A mid-summer storm that interrupted a hazy, humid Sunday afternoon brought lightning, thunder and torrential rains to Roseville and southern Macomb County.
"You couldn't go through the water or you'd get stuck," Lindsey Morgan of Waren said.
Drivers steadily made their way on waterlogged roads. Some chose to wait for the rains and strong winds to pass.
"The hail and everything, the lightning, it was unbelievable. I haven't seen that in a long time," Robert Morgan said.
On Blair Street, stunned neighbors looked on as fire crews worked quickly to put out flames at The New Life Church of God in Christ. Witnesses say severe weather is the likely cause.
Former church member, Joseph Stephens, said, "We got a phone call that lightning struck the church. So the minute we heard the news we came straight out here. We wanted to see it for myself."
Firefighters had to contend with strong winds and rain as they battled the flames. There are no reports of injuries but the building is a total loss.
Investigators are working to confirm if lightning is to blame. Meanwhile, the Roseville fire department is calling in extra help to deal with downed power lines and scattered debris.
