Drivers in Macomb County will soon see construction barrels on a popular road.

Transportation officials got approval to widen North Avenue connecting Hall Road and 21 Mile.

The two lane road will soon turn into four lanes, with a left-turn lane. It took five years to get this project approved.

"Thrilled, yes. I've been pulling my hair for this one. To do widening projects nowadays if very, very hard," said Robert Hoepfner is the Director of Macomb County Department of Roads.

"Because we were requesting federal funds to do this project and it's widening the road from two to five lanes, it requires us to complete an environmental assessment."

The assessment was completed and was approved last week.

Hoepfner says this $5 million project is very much needed.

"Capacity! It is a really congested roadway it connects M-59, an eight lane divided highway with a five lane roadway at 21 Mile Road. It will really improve the flow of traffic."

The next step is hold a public meeting sometime next month for folks to express any concerns they have about the project.

Officials hope to put storm sewers in by the Fall and start paving next Spring.
