Police believe the woman who caused a deadly overnight crash in rural Macomb County overnight was drunk behind the wheel.

She remains in the hospital, but a 34-year-old man was pronounced dead on scene.

Neighbors tell us investigators were at the corner of 26 Mile and Place for hours piecing together the crash caused by a suspected drunk driver.

Noel Lemon woke up early Friday to a deadly crash just across the street.

“That little car was clear off the road here. The truck was off the road on the other side,” Lemon says. “It was up against that pole. It looked like it was probably on its side”

The Macomb County sheriff's office says a 38-year-old woman from New Haven was driving eastbound on 26 Mile, just past midnight, when she crashed head on into a Hyundai sedan driven by a 34-year-old man from Utica. He was pronounced dead on scene.

Investigators suspect she was drunk and she remains in the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The victim, identified as Kinjal Kaushik Patel had just moved to Michigan weeks ago.

The plant manager at Sejasmi Industries in Ira Township tells 7 Action News he hired Patel last month as a second-shift quality supervisor.

He says Patel had plans to move his wife and young kids here from Georgia, once he got more settled.

Patel was killed on his way home from work, about 10 miles west of his workplace.

Investigators are waiting for toxicology results to confirm the woman who crashed into him was drunk.

The crash remains under investigation and charges are pending.
