Shelby Twp. residents express concern at town hall meeting over possible oil drilling

SHELBY TWP., Mich. (WXYZ) - The surprise and shock of finding an oil rig in a Shelby Township neighborhood was one of hundreds of residents' biggest frustrations at an emergency township hall meeting Wednesday evening.

West Bay Exploration, the Traverse City company responsible for drilling for oil in the residential area of 26 Mile and Dequindre, addressed concerned residents and answered questions.

7 Action News first broke the story last week after residents in the Creekside Village neighborhood said they had no warning.

They had been concerned about their safety, water and air pollution, and property value.

This comes after state lawmakers passed a bill three years ago expanding the drilling of Michigan's natural resources.

West Bay Exploration told residents the drilling had been completed and described what exactly had been done at the well.

Meanwhile, township officials say last night they ordered a 6 month moratorium, to stop drilling in residential areas while some state lawmakers, who attended the meeting, look into more permanent solutions.
