EASTPOINTE, Mich. (WXYZ) - A fifteen-year-old boy was injured Friday afternoon in an accident at the East Detroit High School swimming pool.
Police tell 7 Action News the accident happened at about 1:15 p.m. They say the student was then transported to a local hospital where he is being treated
A representative for East Detroit Public Schools says the boy is hospitalized in the intensive care unit.
Detectives are on the scene investigating the accident at the school pool.
East Detroit Public Schools officials sent letters to parents of East Detroit High School notifying them of the accident. The letter says the specifics of the event remain under investigation, and more information will be made public once the information becomes available.
Students who witnessed the teen in the pool say he was in the pool long enough to prompt serious medical attention.
"That's when we came out of the locker room." said student Mercedez Allen, "And he was just in the pool, and people were yelling, ‘He's drowning.' I just couldn't help but tear up."
As the teen remains hospitalized, peers say they're praying for the young man and his family.
"He was just sitting in there in the pool," said Allen, "I just felt really traumatized."
