Criminal charges could be on the way for students and adults involved in an after school fight at L'Anse Creuse High School in Harrison Twp.

Police say it happened just outside the building and on school property Wednesday afternoon.

Amanda Wilhelm came to the school to pick up her daughter and saw the fight. She noticed one of the hall monitors, who was trying to break up the brawl, getting hit. She says that's why she stepped in to help him out.

"All I was just trying to do was help," says Wilhelm.

She wound up in the hospital with injuries that include a busted lip and bruised ribs.

"Students and adults doing this to another person. I was just trying to help. It was uncalled for," she says.

As Wilhelm was knocked to the ground, her gun fell out.

"I heard someone yell - there's a gun! I crawled over and grabbed it immediately. I didn't want someone using it," she says.

Investigators with the Macomb County Sheriff's Office say Wilhelm does have a valid permit to have that gun. They also say they believe they've identified all the people involved in the brawl. They expect criminal charges are on the way.

Investigators believe there may have been talk on social media about a fight that was going to happen. However, a district spokesperson says they knew nothing about a fight until it was happening.

She says two of its staff members can be seen on the video trying to break up the fight. They sent a letter home to parents letting them know about what happened.

Jackie Johnston, superintendent of L'Anse Creuse Public Schools, released this statement to Action News:

"The safety of our students is our number one priority. I am confident that our staff members took the appropriate measures to quickly dissolve the situation. There are many factors that must be taken into account when an incident of this nature occurs; some of our staff and administrators were working to end the altercation while others were ensuring the safety of our students who were not involved. We will continue to work closely with the Macomb County Sherriff’s Department throughout their investigation."
