Grieving mother talks about son who drowned in a quarry in Monroe Township

MONROE TOWNSHIP, Mich (WXYZ) - Donna Martin is overcome with sadness after her son drowned in the old France Stone Quarry in Monroe Township.

It is illegal to swim in the quarry, which is private property. But both police people who live nearby say young people hang out there and swim all the time.

Neighbors say they feared someone would die there.

On Wednesday, twenty-year-old Terence Reid-Lance of Pontiac met up with some girls from the Monroe area and went to the quarry for a swim. Investigators say after about 15 minutes Terence got tired and could not stay afloat or get to the water's edge. He went under.

Divers found him in water that was 35 feet deep.

His mother says Terence knows how to swim but must have panicked. She says she will miss him every day for the rest of her life.

We did call the owner of the property and while he was not available, workers told us they put up fences and "No Trespassing" signs but teens tear them down.

Deputies say they ticket violators but it doesn't keep them away.

Terence's family says they have no money for a funeral.
