A Monroe County man has been charged after his wife's gruesome death in an investigation that lasted months.

The 61-year-old woman passed away back in June. She had been brought to the hospital in terrible condition.

Medical staff said she had skin damage from neglect and an abscess filled with live maggots inside her stomach.

Her husband, 67-year-old Robert Shelton has now been charged with involuntary homicide because of 'gross neglect'

He told police he had been his wife's caretaker for the last five years, but failed to provide the proper care.

After reviewing the case for months, state police arrested Shelton just a few days ago. Today he was arraigned in court.

When they went to his home to investigate, officers say the found deplorable conditions and his wife was suffering a multitude of health issues.

"We know that basically Mrs. Shelton was allowed to lay on mattress soaked in urine and feces,” says MSP trooper Toney Cuevas. “We know this because the mattress and the carpet under the mattress were soaked with this material, we know that she was not provided any type of care by her husband."

Shelton is being held on $25,000 bond, which he was not able to post today.

If he is convicted he could face up to 15 years behind bars.
