Ian Zawacki, 20, was planning on shooting video of a sunset from the sky while him and his 84-year-old grandfather were flying a plane Sunday. .
He ended up shooting a lot more than a sunset when the KitFox Series 7 took a plunge into a cornfield near Saum Road and Strasburg Road in Ida Township.
The airplane's landing gear got caught on to a power line as it was approaching a nearby landing strip.
Zawacki only had minutes to react after the crash when he noticed his grandpa, Wilbert Mattes was injured. "I actually had to pry open the door and pull him out," said Zawacki.
Zawacki walked away from the plane crash with minor scrapes and gashes. His grandfather had to be treated for a broken sternum.
A day after the accident, Zawacki is grateful the injuries were not worse, but he is still shaken up. "I thought I was going to die," said Zawacki.
Zawacki told 7 Action news he will not let this crash deter him from flying planes. He plans to get his pilot license soon.
Matthes was released from the hospital today.
There are some power outages in the area as a result of the crash.
