Challenger with same name as incumbent in race for county commission charged with fraud

EMU student trying for seat on OCC

(WXYZ) - The Oakland County Prosecutor is charging a 22-year-old Eastern Michigan University student with misdemeanor fraud in connection with his bid to win a seat on the Oakland County Commission.

A spokesman for the prosecutor's office says the 22-year-old signed off on and submitted petitions that he did not gather.

According to state law, supporters of a candidate or the candidate themselves can gather signatures, but only those who gather them can sign off on the petitions before submitting them to the respective county clerk.

Here's the twist – the incumbent commissioner and the challenger accused of fraud have the same name: John Scott.

The 22-year-old was running as an independent.

If convicted, the 22-year-old accused challenger faces up to 93 days in jail.
