Woodward Avenue reopens in Royal Oak after being closed because of a gas leak

ROYAL OAK, Mich. (WXYZ) - Consumers Energy crews are on the scene of a gas leak that  closed part of Woodward Avenue in Royal Oak for a few hours.

The road has now reopened..

Police tell 7 Action News that a road construction crew hit a gas line in the area of 11 Mile and Woodward.

Northbound Woodward Avenue was closed, just north of 11 Mile as crews worked to cap the gas leak. Repairs in the area are still ongoing.

Consumers Energy says the road crew struck a two-inch plastic gas main. They say no evacuation was necessary and no one was injured.

The utility has shut down the gas main in order to make repairs. The shut down is expected to last for 2 to 3 hours and will affect about 20 homes along Hartrick.

The gas leak appears to be outside the former Onion Roll Deli location on the corner of Woodward and Hartrick.
