LATHRUP VILLAGE, MI - There's a new home for the shelter that provides for the homeless of south Oakland County. The South Oakland Shelter which works with a network of faith based organizations to help those in need is moving to a new facility. SOS is now going to be located in a 2 story, 10,000 square foot building. This location will be much larger than the previous one and make it easier for the shelter to meet the growing needs of the community. This will allow for expansion of programs that assist those at-risk, homeless men, women and children and move them toward long term stability. The new location is at 18505 West Twelve Mile in Lathrup Village. Mayor Frank Brock says, " We in Lathrup Village are delighted to have the South Oakland Shelter organization become a part of our community." SOS Executive Director Ryan Hertz says: " SOS and our partners will now have a far greater capacity to address the increasing needs of people whose lives have been turned upside down by the recent economic climate." The majority of the past 26 years for SOS has been in a small store front location in Royal Oak. Hertz says, "It is heart-wrenching to have to turn people away," but continues, "It is comforting to know that we will soon be able to do much more for people, thanks to the support and compassion of thousands of supporters throughout Oakland County." The South Oakland Shelter is able to provide emergency shelter through its network of more than 65 congregations in Oakland County.
