Oak Park, Mich. (WXYZ) - A robbery at an Oak Park store ends with a high speed police chase and crash in Detroit.
The robbery happened at the Dollar General Store on 9 Mile and Scotia Monday night.
Oak Park Police said a man walked into the store before closing and went up to the cash register like he was going to buy a small item. The man threatened the cashier when the register was open and made off with all the money.
A witness saw the man get away in a silver pick-up truck and told police.
The police chase ended about three miles away when the suspect in the silver pick-up tried to get away by driving into Detroit. He ran a red light at 6 mile and Schaeffer and then smashed into another motorist at the intersection.
"I heard this tremendous boom and then I came out here," said Darrell who was working in a store near where the chase ended.
The Detroit woman in the car that was struck was not involved in the robbery; she was just an innocent motorist who got caught up in the police pursuit. After officers helped her get out of her vehicle, she was taken to the to the hospital with minor injuries.
One witness told 7 Action News that the suspect found himself surrounded by police before he could even try to exit his vehicle.
"The Oak Park Police got out with their guns drawn. I looked where they were pointing at and one of the cops pulled the guy out and they tased him. He was crying and what not," said Darrell.
Police now have the suspect in custody. They do not believe he used a gun in the robbery and say no one was in the dollar general was hurt.
A large amount of money was found in the suspect's truck. Oak Park Police said they will be will be working with Detroit Police to determine if similar robberies in the Detroit area that have been happening are related.
