ROYAL OAK, Mich. (WXYZ) - A large sinkhole opened up along 11 Mile Road in Royal Oak, causing headaches for drivers Wednesday morning.
The sinkhole is on 11 Mile, near Pleasant Street, east of Woodward Avenue. It was reported around 7:30 a.m. and caused damage to "a few vehicles," police said. No one was hurt.
Greg Rassel, the city's public service director, said he believed a water main break had caused the hole to open up across two eastbound lanes of 11 Mile.
Police were diverting eastbound traffic into one of the westbound lanes of 11 Mile. The sidewalk along eastbound 11 Mile was also closed to pedestrians. Crews expect both the road and sidewalk to reopen later today.
The city said a "cold patch" would be used to temporarily repair the road.
