Sunset at the Zoo goes mobile

Detroit Zoo gala now offers smartphone bidding

ROYAL OAK, Mich. (WXYZ) - The Detroit Zoo will be going mobile or the their 2014 Sunset at the Zoo fundraising gala.

For the first time in the event's history, bidders will be able to submit offers in advance through their smartphones via GiveSmart, a real-time silent auction service. It is not necessary to be at the June 13 auction to participate. 

Items up for bid at Sunset at the Zoo include a Shinola watch and factory tour, afternoon tea at the Whitney, a weekend at the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa, an Old English "D" diamond necklace and breakfast with the giraffes at the Detroit Zoo. 

Sunset at the Zoo takes place from 7 to 11 p.m. regardless of weather. The zoo will close at 2 pm on the 13 in order to prepare for the event, themed "Howling at the Moon" in aim of raising funds of supporting the zoo's future wolf habitat. 

In addition to the auction, Sunset at the Zoo features dishes from 40 of metro Detroit's finest restaurants as well as desserts and zoo-themed specialty drinks. There will also be live entertainment, dancing in the moonlight and twilight access to the Detroit Zoo's award-winning animal habitats. 

Tickets for the gala are available only to those 21-and-older and are $175 person. Patron tickets are $300 and include a VIP reception from 5:30 to 7:30.
