Man watches Channel 7 and realizes he bought a stolen Detroit church bell

ALGONAC, Mich. (WXYZ) - Bill Smith of Algonac is a collector who owns a marine repair business and on Friday he bought an old brass bell from a man in a van for $850.

Then he watched Action News at 6 and saw that a bell was stolen from a Detroit church overnight and he realized it was probably the bell he bought.

He called the police and then called Channel 7 and we went to Algonac to take a look.

We took pictures and sent them to the church and to the Archdiocese of Detroit. An Archdiocese official confirms that this is the bell stolen from the Sweetest Heart of Mary Church.

Bill says the the bell had the name of a church on it where some of his family members were married, so he knew he had to have it. Bill says he will return it to the church.

The Archdiocese and church officials say they so appreciate that the man called Channel 7 after seeing the story.

The Archdiocese says someone will go out to Algonac and get it and return it to Sweetest Heart of Mary where it belongs. That could happen sometime next week.
