CLAY TOWNSHIP, Mich., (WXYZ) - A woman claiming to be the mother of a dead newborn found in a shallow grave in St. Clair County has come forward to police.
"She was emotionally upset and remorseful," says Clay Twp. Police Chief Donald Drake.
The baby's body was found in a plastic bag by a man doing yard work along Stone Road in Clay Township Sunday night.
The woman went to the police department just hours after news reports aired about the disturbing
discovery. The chief says her story seems credible.
"She came in with her boyfriend for support. She gave me information that
leads me to believe it's possible she is the mother of the child," says Chief Drake.
An autopsy has been done, but the results haven't been released yet.
Investigators say it looks like the newborn had been buried in that shallow grave for several years.
Police have taken a DNA sample from the woman claiming to be the mother of that baby, but they expect it will be another month before they get the results.
In the meantime, that woman has been released pending the investigation.
