The “Go Blue Guarantee”, free tuition to in-state students with families that make under 65K a year, made waves at the U of M yesterday.

But lots of folks had questions and comments following our reports.

Like, what if you are just above that mark? And how did the school come up with that number?

We went back to campus for answers.

The university says they determined 65K was roughly equal to the median family income in Michigan. They had to pick a number and that was it.

As for those just above the cut off, the schools says financial aid based on income level should get you pretty close to that free mark too.

The school says they give aid to folks with income as high as 150K a year, so the closer you are to 65K, the closer to a free ride too. Even if not completely free.

The school also announced yesterday they are raising tuition. This has led to some confusion as to if that is what is paying for this new program. The school says no. They already earmarked the millions needed for Go Blue in their financial aid budgets.
