Man with knife accused of attacking kids in Washtenaw County park

YPSILANTI, Mich. (WXYZ) - Ypsilanti Police say a 50-year-old man will be arraigned on Wednesday for attacking a group of kids in a park.

It happened on Monday around 7:45p.m. in Riverside Park.

The man may have thought the kids would be an easy target, but then a witness says he stepped in.

"The kids were just sitting there fishing. They couldn't be no older than 12 or 13. The guy walks up and grabs their fishing poles. The kids were like, ‘Hey, give us our fishing poles back!' Then I stopped the guy," said Duane Hatch.

Hatch says he is a dad, and could not let the guy get away. Hatch, however, does not like authority.

When he heard that someone was calling police on the man, he took off. When he took off, the kids stayed, determined to get their fishing poles back.

Ypsilanti Police say when they arrived, the man had a knife out and was swinging it at the kids. They shot him with a stun gun.

Police say they then arrested the man who required medical treatment for the stun gun injury. The kids were not hurt. The man is expected to be arraigned on charges of felonious assault and resisting and obstructing police.
