Police are investigating two church break-ins in Washtenaw County

SUPERIOR TOWNSHIP (WXYZ) - Officials are investigating two church break-ins in Superior Township.

Both incidents happened late Sunday night into early Monday morning.

One case happened at New Bethel Church of God and Christ off of Stamford in the small community near Ann Arbor.

"Desperation and no regard for the house of God,"  said the church's pastor David L. Foster .

The burglars busted a window and after ransacking the house of worship, they took off with a little cash.

Across town, on Church Road at Dixboro Methodist Church, the same method of operation: breaking a window.

Doors inside the building were also damaged.   Pastor Tonya Arnesen told 7 Action News it is the oldest Methodist church in the state.

"They destroyed most of the file cabinets in our church office," said Pastor Arnesen.

"They did find the file cabinet that had the spare keys and then used it to get in my office.  But it's pretty clear to us that they were looking for cash."

The would-be thieves didn't get any.  The church only had a few bucks inside for a coffee collection.

"This was such a total waste,"  Pastor Arnesen.  "The only money that they did find, the $9.00, they forgot to take with them and so all they did was create an upheaval here and destroy a beautiful historic building."

She suspects the intruders picked a late Sunday night to strike after money collections are gathered during earlier services in the day.

"We don't keep cash here," said Pastor Arnesen.  "In fact, I don't think most churches in today's world keep cash around at all.  With automatic deposit and with online giving…"

While the cases are under investigation, both pastors have forgiveness in their hearts.

"I hope they're caught and an end put to it but God sees all and it won't profit them in anything," said Pastor Foster.

"I wish that the thieves had stolen a few bibles at least I would have felt like there was some good purpose in all of this," said Pastor Arnesen.

At New Bethel Church of God in Christ, they plan on adding stricter security.

Anyone with any information on these cases is asked to call the Washtenaw Sheriff's Department (586) 307 – 9358.
