(WXYZ) - Security cameras will soon be in place at a popular off-campus apartment complex near Eastern Michigan University.
The Peninsular Place Apartments has entered into a cost-sharing agreement with Ypsilanti Township, Washtenaw County Sheriff's Department, and EMU police to implement a surveillance camera system.
The apartment will pay one-time $200 connection fee and $50 annual maintenance charge per camera to the township.
Security upgrades came after high profiles deaths happened at or near the Peninsular Place Apartments in recent years. Julia Niswender was found dead in her apartment in 2012. EMU football star Demarius Reed was shot and killed nearby the complex at the University Green Apartments last year.
Eastern Michigan University says management for the Peninsular Place Apartments approached the school to put the cameras into place.
Action News reached out to the Peninsular Place Apartment management for comment, but our calls have not been returned.
