PITTSFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WXYZ) - A woman is fighting for her life after her husband and another man are killed in a head-on collision.
Rush hour traffic on Michigan Avenue at Textile came to a halt at 8:30 a.m. this morning after a black Chevy Cobalt and tan Ford Mercury collided head-on.
Pittsfield Township police say the Cobalt's 28-year-old male driver, who was from Ypsilanti, was pronounced dead at the scene after attempts to extricate the victims.
The elderly couple from Freedom Township was in the tan Mercury. The 81-year-old man who was driving was also declared dead. His wife, a 71-year-old woman, was taken to the hospital.
Their friends tell 7 Action News the woman is expected to recover, but will need additional surgeries.
They also say the loss of their friend, who was a farmer and active church member, will leave a hole in their hearts. The elderly couple had just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
Police are working to determine who crossed the center line but at this time, drugs and alcohol are not believed to be a factor.
