WESTLAND, Mich. (WXYZ) - 7 Action News first brought you the story of a man following UPS trucks over the holiday season and stealing packages off porches. Now, that man has been caught.
With an anonymous tip in reference to that report, Westland Police were able to arrest Robert Ray Ohlinger who admitted to the theft of the package seen on video in the story.
According to police, Ohlinger admitted to stealing more than a dozen packages from homes in Westland, Canton and Livonia.
Westland Police Lieutenant Todd Adams said that police were able to get pictures from the video, and started receiving calls immediately after it aired.
"Twice in two weeks the Westland Police Department has been able to identify wanted persons through the help of the media," Westland Police Chief Jeff Jedrusik said. "It is nice to see community and law enforcement working together to take criminals off our streets."
Adams believes there could be more victims out there.
"They may not know they are victims," Adams said. "They just assumed the package didn't show up or they think it got lost."
