LIVONIA, Mich., (WXYZ) - An adult recreation league soccer referee died Tuesday after receiving a punch to the head from a disgruntled player.
Livonia Police say 44-year-old John Bieniewicz, of Westland died after taking a swift punch to the head by thirty-six-year-old Baseel Abdul-Amir Saad in Mies Park Sunday. Bieniewicz had just ejected Saad from the game when the Dearborn resident lost his cool.
Saad was arraigned Monday afternoon, charged with assault with intent to do great bodily harm. Those charges will likely change now that Bieniewicz lost his life.
According to the Associated Press, Bieniewicz was a dialysis technician at Mott Children's Hospital who lived in Westland with his wife and two sons.
A fund has been established to help the family at Huntington Bank. Contributions can be made at the Livonia Police Department at 15050 Farmington Road in Livonia or at any Huntington Bank in Michigan.
"The Livonia Police Department has expressed our deepest sympathy to the family of Mr. Bienewicz," read a press release Tuesday.
