DEARBORN, Mich. (WXYZ) - The Wayne County Prosecutor's office has amended the charges against a Dearborn man accused of assaulting a soccer referee who later died.
Bassel Abdul-Amir Saad is now facing second degree murder charges in the death of John Bieniewicz.
Prosecutors say that Saad was playing in a soccer game in Mies Park on June 29. During the game Bieniewicz moved to eject Saad from the game.
Officials say that Saad became upset and punched Bieniewicz in the head, critically injuring him.
Bieniewicz was taken to the hospital, where he later died.
Saad was originally charged with Assault with Intent to Do Great Bodily Harm. That charge has now been dismissed and replaced with the Second Degree Murder charge.
Saad is currently being held in the Wayne County Jail on a $1 million cash/surety bond. He is expected to be arraigned on the amended charges on Thursday at 9:00 a.m.
