Large freighter stuck in Lake St. Clair after running aground near the Detroit River

(WXYZ) - A large freighter carrying a load of wheat to Montreal has run aground in Lake Saint Clair. The U.S. Coast Guard says the ship is blocking part of the shipping channel near the Detroit River.

The ship goes by the name Federal Rideau and is a Hong Kong-flagged vessel according to the Coast Guard. It ran aground early Sunday morning.

The freighter is 656 feet long and 580 feet of it are still in the Lake St. Clair shipping channel. This means Canadian Coast Guard crews are having to route some shipping traffic around the grounded freighter.

The U.S. Coast Guard says the stuck freighter has a load of 22,672 tons of wheat. They say a steering problem caused the Federal Rideau to run aground and that has been fixed.

Meanwhile, Coast Guard crews say they know of no pollution and no injuries associated with the stuck freighter. They are working to free it using tugboats.
