HAMTRAMCK, Mich. (WXYZ) - A Hamtramck bakery puts the "fat" in Fat Tuesday as they churn out countless paczki.
The line wrapped around the building early Tuesday morning at New Palace Bakery.
Customers braved the frigid temperatures and waited outside for up to three hours for the Polish pastry. Each time the door open, they caught a whiff of what they were patiently waiting for.
Traditionally, the Polish Catholic community has made paczki to rid their cabinets of sugar, lard, fruit and eggs before Lent. These days, however, you'll find customers of all backgrounds devouring the high-calorie treat.
Suzy Ognanovich, who works at New Palace Bakery, says the store closed on Monday after it sold out of paczki around 6:30 p.m.
She says work continued behind closed doors so the bakery would be ready to re-open at 3:00 a.m.
Bakers have been making the donut-like pastries non-stop, making sure each pastry is perfect, especially for customers who are giving up sweets for the 40 days of Lent!
