GIBRALTAR, Mich. (WXYZ) - A Gibraltar police officer is on paid administrative leave after he used his taser on a suspect that later died at a nearby hospital on Thursday. The man has been identified as 39-year-old David Michael Kapuscinski from Gibraltar.
It all started around 3:22 a.m. Thursday to an apartment complex. Police Chief Larry Williams said Kapuscinski was assaulting someone. Sources say he was the boyfriend of the victim, and he wasn't listening to officers command.
After being tasered, Chief Williams says Kapuscinski began to "exhibit a medical condition, where he was transported to Southshore Medical Hospital and later pronounced dead."
The chief said officers did everything they could before deploying the taser.
Sources say the man had been inside the apartment for some time, but it's unclear just how long.
Right now, the officer has been placed on leave pending the results of a Michigan State Police investigation.
