DEARBORN, Mich. (WXYZ) - The Dearborn Police Department is thanking an alert citizen for notifying them about a potentially dangerous situation outside their own headquarters.
Police say the citizen spotted a suspicious man peering through the gate into the secure Dearborn Police Department's parking lot shortly before 7:00 p.m. Saturday.
The citizen told the police dispatcher that the man was carrying an object that he had removed from a vehicle and that he had crawled under the locked gate, before crawling under a police vehicle.
Officers say they were able to locate the man under the police vehicle and take him into custody. A loaded Winchester 30-30 caliber rifle was found concealed in a green shirt that was lying next to the 50-year-old suspect.
"Thanks to an alert citizen getting involved a tragedy was averted," said Chief Ronald Haddad.
The man was taken to Oakwood Hospital for psychiatric evaluation.
