Michigan Wolverine fans fly to Atlanta to support their team in Final Four

ROMULUS, Mich. (WXYZ) - For the first time in 20 years the Michigan Wolverines have found themselves atop the highest ranks in basketball.

Early this morning dozens of Wolverine fans donning the maize and blue took off for Atlanta from Detroit Metro airport.

Amid the early morning hustle and bustle of the airport fans spread out checking in bags, getting their boarding passes and finding the nearest security check point to get to the terminal, you could find plenty of Michiganders ready to board a plane bound for Atlanta.

"I'm really looking forward to it," Akshay Jetli said.

Jetli is a student at U of M and says the loyalty goes with being a student. Confidence he says is key,

"I'm pretty sure we're going to win so can't wait," he says.

Already Jetli and his friend, Rohan say they're confident their Wolverines will show up ready to battle,

"We're going to stay there for Monday for sure. I know we're going to make it," he says.

The level of enthusiasm at 6:30 am was contagious. U of M alum Mark Colisomo was making his way through the McNamara Terminal when 7 Action News talked with him. He says after years of waiting it's finally here.

"It's exciting to see Michigan back at the Final Four after so long so I had to make it, couldn't miss it for the world," he says.

Colisomo says his plans are to join a few of his friends in Atlanta once he and his son, Nathan land and get to their hotel.

"I'm a huge U of M fan," Nathan says and he says he's looking forward to hanging out with the big boys.

For some the decision to make the trip wasn't easy. It took some thought.

"We had not planned to go but got to thinking when's it going to happen again?" Marty Gillespie said.

His thoughts on it?

"Maybe never, maybe next year," but that's not enough so he and his friend decided at the last minute to make the trip.

"Got to go now, got to go now," he said.
