SOUTHFIELD (WXYZ) - A fire destroyed part of a River Rouge home last week leaving a mother of nine kids wondering what she will do next.
River Rouge Fire Marshall Roberto Cruz contacted Channel 7 looking for help for this family. Cruz says, "we don't normally go to a TV station after we have a fire but this family touched the entire fire department with their kind way, so we wanted to see if anything could be done.'
The home is severely damaged with most of the repair needed in the upstairs portion of the house. It is difficult to imagine the entire family of 10 living in a small downstairs area that also has some damage.
The video above shows what kind of situation the family is dealing with and it isn't good. However, they don't have anywhere to go and they want to be together.
Jannie Jackson is a loving single mother, who is raising her nine children by herself. She is a full-time student, so you can imagine how difficult it is for her to get by each day. She recently gave up her home insurance to have enough money to pay for higher heating bills this winter.
She also purchased space heaters to help keep the kids warm and unfortunately, one of them got too close to an upstairs bed which caused the fire.
Jackson says, "we were just fortunate that nobody got hurt, you can replace material things. We are just happy to be together."
Cruz says the structure of the home is safe, but it needs a lot of work. Cruz says he will be the contact for any person or company that can help the Jacksons fix their home.
