DETROIT(WXYZ) - Nearly half of the Hamtramck Fire Department will be laid off Monday afternoon as a result of budget cuts.
Eleven Firefighters will receive pink slips and one vacant position was eliminated, leaving 15 firefighters to cover the city.
Seven of those 15 firefighters are required to be on duty every day.
Hamtramck Mayor Karen Majewski says the layoffs were scheduled to happen due to budget cuts, and the news shouldn't come as a surprise.
While the city is citing budget cuts, the firefighters' union is saying that the layoffs are a power move to get more concessions.
A grant to restore those jobs is pending.
