Sources: Bob Bashara paid $2,000 in attempted murder-for-hire plot against Joe Gentz

GROSSE POINTE PARK, Mich. (WXYZ) - Law enforcement sources are now telling 7 Action News that Bob Bashara paid $2,000 to have Joe Gentz killed in jail.

The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office called a 11:00 a.m. Wednesday news conference to announce charges relating to Monday's arrest of Bob Bashara.

This comes as law enforcement sources are also telling 7 Action News that the arrest of Bashara unfolded rapidly after police learned of the alleged plot.

7 Action News is being told that Bashara approached someone he trusted last week to arrange the murder of Joe Gentz . Sources are telling us that it was that unidentified person who approached police.

We are being told that person agreed to let police record his conversations with Bashara.

Sources are telling us that the attempt on Gentz's life was supposed to take place in jail. There was no set date when it was supposed to take place.

The Gentz family has released the following statement about the latest developments:

The family is relieved that police arrested Bob Bashara. We are very upset that Bob tried to put a hit out on Joe. Joe always said he has wanted the truth to come out.

Bashara was arrested Monday night at his rental property in Grosse Pointe Park. He has long been considered a person of interest in the murder of his wife, Jane Bashara.

Bashara is also facing allegations that he violated a Personal Protection Order filed by Rachel Gillett . Gillett's attorney tells 7 Action News that Bashara went to Gillett's house and tried to have a third party contact her.

Gillett is Bashara's former mistress. She filed a request for the PPO in April saying that she was concerned about her safety and that she was terrified of Bashara.

Joe Gentz is currently in custody in the murder of Jane Bashara. Sources have told 7 Action News that Gentz told police he killed Jane Bashara while being held at gunpoint by Bob Bashara.

Jane Bashara's body was found in the backseat of her SUV in Detroit in January. An autopsy found that she had been strangled.
