Police: Construction worker dragged while trying to stop thief

EASTPOINTE, Mich., (WXYZ) - A 42-year-old construction worker sustained injuries to his legs after he tried to stop a thief in Eastpointe late Monday morning.

It happened on Gratiot Avenue at Eight Mile where a construction crew was working in the median.

Eastpointe Police say the suspect parked in the lot of a White Castle near the construction site and then walked over to some of their equipment and stole a black and orange colored Husqvarna cement saw valued at $850.

Police say the construction worker was injured when he tried to stop the thief as he was driving away. Witnesses say it appeared the worker was hanging onto the side of the suspect's car or stuck as the car traveled south on Gratiot.

Investigators say it appears the suspect may have intentionally hit some of the orange barrels to get the worker off his car.

The victim ended up in the center lane of Gratiot, south of E. 8 Mile Rd. He was taken to a nearby hospital.

The suspect is described as a 30 to 40-year-old black male. He stood about 5'10" tall with a stocky build. He got away in a older model two-door passenger car that was a darker red color.

Anyone with information on this case is urged to call Eastpointe Police at (586)445-5100.
