Worker killed in early morning fire at US Steel in Ecorse

ECORSE, Mich. (WXYZ) - A worker has been killed in an explosion and fire at the US Steel Plant in Ecorse.

Two other workers suffered minor injuries.

Sgt. Scott Douglas with the Department says they were called about the fire at 2:50 am Sunday morning.

Douglas says, "Reports I have received are that it was fatal."

US Steel spokesperson Courtney Boone told the Associated Press that the explosion happened at the plant's steel shop and killed a remote control locomotive operator.

Boone identified the worker as 32-year-old Antonino Palazzolo and says he had been with the company for about two years.

Boone tells the AP that the company has halted steel making at the plant and that they are working with the union and regulators to investigate.
